Who May Apply

Institutions

Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations, institutions or groups (whether or not incorporated or tax-exempt). An organization that is not incorporated must present proof the organization exists. By-laws or a letter that states the organization exists will suffice. Eligible applicants include civic groups, school boards, PTAs, teacher associations, service clubs, libraries, museums, historical societies, church groups, professional organizations, labor unions, public television and radio stations, divisions of the university and agencies of state and local government.

Individuals

VIHC provides no funding directly to individuals to carry out projects.

Grant Amounts

VIHC operates two main grant categories: Major Grants and Mini Grants.

The major grant category includes requests above $3,500 up to $10,0000.
The mini grant category includes requests up to $3,500.

VIHC also operates a Teacher Incentive Grant Program aimed at helping teachers to improve humanities courses, to develop new classes or teaching units and to pilot model projects. This grant program carries an award of up to $750.

Deadlines

Major grants are awarded first working day of July and October. Mini grants are awarded 4 times a year – on the first working day of January, April, July and October.

Applications should be submitted no less than 8 weeks prior to commencement of the proposed project.
